On January 22, 2025, Her Excellency Karla Hershey, the UN Resident Coordinator, visited the OPM CARLEP and ARDC Wengkhar during her attendance at a youth-focused UNICEF program in Mongar, eastern Bhutan. This marked her second visit to the eastern region and first time visit to Wengkhar. Her Excellency was received by Offtg. Program Director and staff from the center.

Her visit to CARLEP OPM and the ARDC was aimed at familiarizing herself with the programs and projects supported by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), particularly those benefiting the agricultural sector in the region.

Among the highlights of her visit was a close look at the integration of automation into agricultural production. Key innovations such as the use of efficient and SMART irrigation technologies, hydroponic systems in strawberry and the cultivation of citrus in controlled environments through protected citriculture were showcased.

Her Excellency was also briefed on the overall CARLEP program, which has had significant success in supporting rural livelihoods in the eastern region. The program, backed by IFAD, has focused on sustainable agricultural practices and enhancing the productivity and resilience of smallholder farmers. IFAD, a specialized UN agency and international financial institution, has been instrumental in driving these transformative projects.

The visit underscored the importance of international support in advancing sustainable agriculture and rural development in Bhutan.
