Lhuentse Dzongkhag Initiates 3rd Phase Cattle Sourcing

November 19th, 2020

Farmers make a huge investment in dairy breed improvement through the purchase of high breed cattle. However, selecting and purchasing an appropriate breed is one of the foremost steps that should be done beforehand. The selection and the sourcing of the right breeds are being initiated by the gewog and Dzongkhag Livestock sector with the fund support from CARLEP-IFAD. This initiative aims to encourage more farmers into dairy farming as well as boost higher milk production, thereby increase income and earn better livelihoods.

After successfully sourcing the 1st phase of FY 20-21 cattle sourcing for farmers of Maenbi and Gangzur gewog, and 2nd phase cattle sourcing for Jang under Gangzur gewog, the Lhuentse livestock sector continues with the 3rd phase cattle sourcing for 10 HHs of Minjey Gewog.

In the 3rd phase, a total of 10 milking cows and 8 calves are being sourced from Tsirang Dzongkhag with the 30% subsidy support from the CARLEP-IFAD, benefiting 10 dairy farmers of Minjey Gewog. The cost of a cow ranges from Nu. 80,000 to Nu. 110,000. Besides the purchase of a cow, the transportation and other cost incurred during the cattle sourcing is also borne by the project.
In this FY, to date, the Lhuentse Dzongkhag alone has sourced 39 cows and 24 calves from the other Dzongkhags.
